I like a good hacker story, especially one with a plucky female lead. I'll give Haylie 4½☆ for showing plenty of cunning and resolve, though I was a bit disappointed that, after all she went through, Haylie acted so naïvely at the end, but then she's only 17. And presumably there's more in store for her in the sequel.Shutting down civilization as we know it seems the de rigueur plot point in several recent novels, but Crash Alive gives it a bit more interesting twist. Lots to be skeptical about, but overall entertaining action with even some thriller-type suspense. If you don't mind a few typos and you want to see "rich white dudes that are drunk with power" get their comeuppance, check out Haylie's romp.

Crash Alive A NextGeneration Thriller Christopher Kerns 9780692575710 Books Reviews
I bought this book with the intention that both my daughter and I could read it. I took it on a vacation weekend and it was perfect, as I didn't want to put it down. Yay for smart strong female characters and a story line that both my 12 year old and I could enjoy (i.e. no crazy mushy love elements, but some good tension.) The premise behind the antagonist group is also a little scary in that it could be (or is!) a real thing. I could see this being a young adult movie - thoroughly enjoyable. Nice work Mr Kerns!
I found the story to be exciting from the first chapter to the very last word!! This author knows how to keep you interested in what is going to happen next. A great read for any age
In today’s world this was more believable than some. Great characters and was a fun filled story. I will look forward to the next installment. Thank you😺
Nice fast paced read! A little James Bondish in places. Different approach to a thriller...but nonetheless, one in that category.
If even a half of the 'hacking' explanations are real, the book becomes even more intriguing! I recommended it to a friend.
Michae
This is a fast-paced gripping ride. The book is accessible (and appropriate) for young adults while complex enough to please adults. A smart, sassy heroine takes on Bond like villains in a high stakes global cat-and-mouse. Kerns places real technology against a backdrop of bizarre but equally real settings to create a page-turner of a first novel. At some point, you will lift your head from the pages and wonder where the day went.
A smart girl, cool tech, mysterious internet puzzle, secret societies…count me in. This book was definitely a page turner. I was on a family vacation and had a little time waiting in the car so I downloaded it to my phone and finished the last few chapters. I never read on my phone but I could not wait. Many times my heart was beating faster as I read. I loved this book and I can't wait for the next one. It would be appropriate for upper middle school to adult. There are a few cuss words but other than that just pure story. This is one of my favorite books so far this year. I can easily envision it as a movie. I hope someone options it.
This book was a lightning-quick read, that's surprisingly clean. It's exciting and full of interesting side characters, locations, and tidbits. I suspect the author has a screenplay in mind, given the visual style of the action sequences.
The good
The pacing is great, the action is tangible. There's a strong, uncompromising girl at the center of the story. An unusually grounded, realistic view of computer hackers is the foundation for this world. That part works really well.
I love the introduction towards the end of some "good" characters with slightly more diverse views. The book feels like a terrific airplane read. But there's potential for the series to build into much more.
The not-as-good
Good and evil are pretty simplistic in this first book. I'd like to see a more challenging backdrop for these characters. We're talking about characters whose primary means of changing the world is through illegal intrusion and deception.
As strong as the lead (Haylie) is, I think the author could dive a little deeper into her inner life. The fast pacing of the book was sometimes at the cost of characterization. If she finds her voice, I'll be completely hooked.
